Debt Relief Lawyers

Why is it that people hate lawyers but then watch them on prime time television?

Seriously, I don’t get it. People blame lawyers for all of society’s problems these days, then go home and watch the latest episode of “Law and Order”. It doesn’t make sense.

And yes, those “debt relief” commercials drive me and my parents (both of whom are lawyers) up the walls for disgracing a noble profession.

Well, I think you might not have thought this through completely.
If you do debt relief law, television advertising is a good way to get more clients, and there’s nothing wrong with it or even disgraceful about it. It’s advertising a service. I don’t know why you or anyone else would be more offended at that than at any other commercial.
On the other hand, “Law & Order” and other lawyer shows are — hello? Entertainment. I love the show as much as the next guy, but it’s not how the law really works, and if anything is disgraceful — just playing devil’s advocate here — it’s people thinking that this is how the law really works. I am a paralegal, and I can’t tell you how many people think that their case will be resolved in a few weeks (or even less) because of the neat way every case is resolved and the bad guy is put away in a nice hour-long block.
I also disagree that “people blame lawyers for all of society’s problems.” There are lawyers who really do a lot of good, and help people who need it and otherwise would have their rights violated. Just like in any profession, there are people who make it look bad. Don’t jump to conclusions and rant about assumptions and half-truths.
